From 1 August to 1 October, an exhibition "A strong power of a soul and talent" devoted to the 100th anniversary of Belarusian composer, teacher, Honored artist of Belarus, Professor A. Bogatyrev (1913–2003) runs in the Music and Audio Materials Reading Room.
He is a senior representative of the national art, the establisher of the modern Belarusian composer school. During all his life, A. Bogatyrev was involved in the development of professional musical art. From 1944 to 2003, he was engaged in teaching at the Belarusian Academy of Music and trained more than 30 composers. His students were such well-known figures as Y. Glebov, I. Luchanok, G. Vagner, Y. Semyanyako, D. Smolsky, S. Kortes, A. Mdivani, G. Surus, E. Tyrmand, V. Soltan, L. Zakhlevny, etc.
His musical heritage includes operas, symphonies, cantatas, oratorios, concertos and genres of a small form. They are distinguished by the relevance of theme, an optimistic nature of concepts and the magnificence of artistic characteristics. It is typical for his music to have the profundity of creative idea, a philosophical perception of reality, a true patriotism, a subtle understanding of folk culture, a multifaceted reproduction of ways of living.
All these features provoke a constant attention to Bogatyrev’s activity, and therefore his works are in a great demand among performers and listeners. This composer’s works were for many new trends to be an impulse. They determined a lot of stylistic strata of the modern Belarusian music and laid the foundation of the musical culture in Belarus.
The main part of the exhibition is musical editions and audio documents presented from the funds of the National Library of Belarus. It is the opera V puschakh Polesya (In the virgin forests of Polesie), the cantata Skaz o Medvedikhe (A fairy tale about the Mother Bear), the cantata Belorusskim partizanam (To the Belarusian partisan), the first and second of symphonies, Prazdnichnaya uvertsyara (A festive overture), instrumental and vocal music, adaptations of Belarusian folk songs, etc. The visitors of the exhibition have an opportunity to see Bogatyrev’s publications. The most interesting items among the exhibits are manuscripts of works and photos from the composer’s family archive.
The exposition also includes books and articles devoted to the life and work of A. Bogatyrev.
