From May 6th to June 1st, a thematic book exhibition “All starts with the family” timed to the International Family Day runs in the Official documents reading room (auditorium 207).


This Day is observed annually since on 15 May. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 1993 according to the resolution on the International Year of the Family (А/RES/47/237).

The International Family Day sets as an object to pay attention to numerous problems of the family. The observance of this Day is an opportunity to consider the role of the family in the context of the development, to sum up the latest tendencies and to share the best practices of family policy, to examine problems facing families all over the world and to offer their solutions.

Various educational, public and celebratory events are held on this day: concerts, meetings of married couples having a wide experience of home life, charitable actions for large and needy families, trainings for young families, thematic practical works and conferences dedicated to the family and other actions.

The basic purpose of family policy in any state is the maintenance of necessary conditions allowing the family to fulfill its economic, reproduction, educational and cultural-psychological functions. In the Republic of Belarus, the maintenance of the family is an important state priority.

The basic directions of family policy in our country are as follow: the improvement of material conditions of families, the strengthening of moral principles of the family and the increase of its prestige, rendering of all-round aid to the family in education of children, the maintenance of talented children, maternity and childhood protection, prevention of social orphanage, the maintenance of incomplete and needy families etc.

The offered exhibition includes over 100 documents: books, brochures, periodicals and mimeographed papers of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe) in Russian, French and English languages.

The exposition consists of the following thematic sections:

  • The family in the epoch of social changes.
  • The legal norms of family relations.
  • The woman in the family: marriage, motherhood, career.
  • Children education in the family.
  • Health in the family.
  • The family and violence.
  • The family psychology, the family and marriage.
  • The family in modern Belarusian society.

The exhibition will be useful to specialists in social sciences, students, post-graduates and professors of sociological, demographic and legal disciplines, and also to a wide audience interested in problems of the family and marriage.
