On June 13th – 26th, the exhibition "Belarus and Orthodoxy” timed to celebrations of 1025 years of Christening of Russia runs in the National Library of Belarus (2nd floor, circular hall).


The exhibition presents editions of the 19th – early 20th centuries (about 200 documents) which reveal the essence of religion as a public phenomenon and the origins, becoming and distribution of Orthodoxy among East Slavs including Belarusians.

The first exhibition block “From the history of the orthodox Church” includes editions of the 19th – middle of the 20th centuries from the collections of the National Library of Belarus: biographies of ecclesiastics, devotees and protectors of Orthodoxy; archival documents; eparchy acts; books and notes about activity of Orthodox missions; historical descriptions of Belarusian churches; reference books about saint Belarusian abodes; sermons on religious truth, life and piety; descriptions of church plates and liturgical items kept in museums; collections of monuments on the history of canon law (1912); lectures, sermons and epistles of clergy etc.

The second block includes the following sections:

  • ”The Orthodox way”
  • ”Orthodox sanctuaries”
  • ”Education through the word and the life”
  • ”The Orthodox Belarus”

Books devoted to the milestones in the history of Orthodoxy and the basic doctrines of the Orthodox Church, as well as the unique documentary material and memoirs of representatives of priesthood of several generations are on display. These editions present the history of distribution of Orthodoxy by the example of lives, works and selfless activity of its missionaries, from the times of the Christening of Russia in 988 and till present day.

Books acquaint with Orthodox relics and contain biographies of saints esteemed by the Orthodox Church, their epistles, sermons and prayers.

The main place at the exhibition is given to the theme of Orthodoxy in Belarus. Book editions reflect the way of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, the history and fate of its temples and relics and their reviews. Biographies of great Belarusian devotees and saints are on display: Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Cyril of Turov, Georgy Konissky, Leonty Karpovich and others. The numerous book materials reveal the significance of the Orthodox Church in the development of Belarusian culture.
