The exhibition “Building Peace in the Minds of People”, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been opened in the Official Documents Department (207) from November 5 to December 8.

UNESCO was established at the conference of the United Nations, which took place after the Second World War in November 1945 in London. 37 States signed the Charter of the new international organization on November 16, 1945. The Charter came into effect on November 4, 1946 after its ratification by 20 states. The current members of UNESCO are 195 countries and its headquarters are located in Paris, France.

In the first years of its existence, UNESCO helped rebuild schools, libraries and museums destroyed during the Second World War, and acted as a kind of intellectual platform for the exchange of ideas and scientific knowledge. Since then, the organization held a number of campaigns that have contributed to the construction of the knowledge of the society: equal access to education, preservation of biodiversity, preservation of famous historical and cultural intangible and tangible monuments, media freedom and the right of people to access information.

For seventy years, UNESCO has been the embodiment of the aspirations, hopes and continuous struggle for a better life based on human dignity, mutual understanding and solidarity between people. Due to its high international authority, UNESCO influences the public policy of the member states and carries out large-scale cultural, educational, information and research programs.

Broad goals and concrete objectives of the international community – coordinated at the international level development goals, including the Development Goals, stated in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) are at the heart of all policies and activities of UNESCO. The unique character of UNESCO’s areas of competence that cover education, science, culture, communication and information contributes to the achievement of these goals.

UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the consolidation of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information.

UNESCO has a wide network of regional, cluster and national offices, institutions and centers in many countries, in accordance with UNESCO’s Charter states create national commissions for the involvement of their institutions that address the issues of education, science and culture in the organization.

The Republic of Belarus joined UNESCO in 1954. Since its accession to membership, our country has actively participated in the activities of the organization, and has been elected four times a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO.
