A thematic book exhibition "Children have the rights” timed to the International Child Protection Day runs in the Legal information reading room (207b) from 30 May to 28 August.

Nearly a quarter of the world’s population are children. They are a kind of a social barometer, and the attitude towards the child most accurately determines the status and level of the development of a society in which children live and are brought up.

Minors require a legal protection due to their mental and physical immaturity, the need for protection and care, the inability to assert their rights in many situations. The development of mechanisms to protect children from forced labor and parental abuse, as well as the search for the ways to counter the trafficking of child resulted in the creation in the twentieth century of normative legal acts of the rights and freedoms of the child.

The summit of lawmaking in the field of the rights of the child was the adoption in 1989 International Convention on the Rights of the Child, a kind of constitution for the rights of children around the world.

The Republic of Belarus, recognizing all the importance of international cooperation to ensure decent living conditions and the harmonious development of the younger generation, has ratified the Convention in 1990. In the national legislation the basic provisions on the rights of minors are fixed in the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus , and also in the law “On the rights of the child” and other legal documents. During the last ten years a new state policy for children has been forming in Belarus. It is aimed at creating conditions for their rights, providing them with the necessary assistance and support from the society and the state.

However, against the background of the socio-economic changes and challenges, including the negative effects of the Chernobyl disaster, the country is not able to fully resolve the problem of improving the situation of children and the protection of their rights. All this points to the need for further improving the legal framework on children’s rights, strengthening the coordination of the state bodies and public organizations to improve the situation of children, to ensure their rights and interests protection.

Protection of children’s rights is among the global problems of our time which concern the whole international community. This is explained by the fact that the future of any society and humanity on the whole depends on the level of spiritual and physical development of the younger generation.

The offered exhibition includes over 70 documents: books, brochures, periodicals, theses.

The exhibition consists of the following sections:
