The exhibition of books and illustrations “Creator of his own universe”, dedicated to the 545th anniversary of the great German artist Albrecht Dürer, runs in the fine arts reading room (306) from May 20 till June 28.


Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), the artist, engraver, painter and scientist, one of the progressive people of that time, lived and created in the epoch of the Northern Renaissance, the artistic period of the 15th and 16th centuries in the Northern Europe. It was the time of changes in the social and spiritual lives, new way of scientific and cultural development, epoch that needed titans. Albrecht Dürer embodied the image of the Renaissance artist and thinker, universal master, genuinely great creator.

His figure in the German art development is extremely important. He was one of the first to paint from nature, employed forshortening and created three-dimensional images, wrote theoretical treatises for artists. He studied maths, astronomy and astrology, optics, geography, town planning and fortifications, flora and fauna, wrote poems. While creating his own universe, he made an invaluable contribution into perfection of the human civilization.

He reached the acme of skill of graphic art, xylography and etching. His graphic series Apocalypse, Great Passion, Life of the Virgin, Master’s Engravings are widely known. These reproductions are a significant part of the exposition.

The exhibition offers treatises and letters of the German artist, prints, his theoretical heritage in the area of exact sciences. Dürer’s paintings Praying Hands, Young Hare, Rhinoceros, landscapes and sketches will draw attention.

The exposition includes famous self-portraits, where the master shows interest to a personality and shows that every artist is a creator, and it means he is like God.

The fundamental research about Dürer of the famous German fine art expert Erwin Panofsky Albrecht Dürer (1945), where master’s work is studied in the context of German and Italian art, is very valuable in the exhibition.

The exposition presents more than 50 documents, including reproductions, exhibitions’ catalogs, books and postcards.
