From December 12th, 2012, to January 21st, 2013, at the National Library of Belarus (2nd floor, circular hall) there runs a subject book exhibition “Happy New Year!”.


Christmas and the New Year are our favorite holidays, the time of a joyful expectation of a miracle when the world becomes a little bit better. All bad is forgotten, and people start to believe in the magic fairy tale.

A bright and colorful book exposition tells about the history of the holidays, the New Year’s and Christmas traditions, national signs and beliefs.

Christmas is one of the main Christian holidays devoted Jesus Christ’s birth.

The central place in the exposition belongs to modern editions about Christmas celebrations in Belarus, Russia, France, Germany, Canada and other countries.

The next year is according to the eastern calendar is the year of the Snake. The snake is a sign of riches and nobleness. Many editions are devoted to this mythological character. It is possible to familiarize with some of them at the book exhibition.

The magic New Year’s atmosphere is created with a holiday interior, Christmas fare and entertainments. Visiting the exhibition you can learn how to decorate the apartment, design original gifts for your friends and natives, make masks, souvenirs and Christmas-tree decorations. On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
