On August 2–21, in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205) there runs a book exhibition “From the Molodnyak Pleiad” timed to the 100th anniversary from the birth of Belarusian writer and literary critic Boris Mikulich (1912–1954).

Boris Mikulich’s works have a remarkable place in Belarusian literature of the 1930s. They are notable for their close connection with political and economic life of the country of that time and a profound psychologism and comprehension of human characters, a vivid and expressive language. The writer’s short stories reflect the romanticism of the revolutionary epoch, events of the civil war, collectivization, an unprecedented rise and work capacity of young generation, becoming of new mutual relations between people.

The exhibition section “The talent young and bright” presents the writer’s lifetime collections published before his first groundless arrest in 1936: Blow (Удар) (1931), Black Virnya (Чорная вірня) (1931), Our Sun (Наша сонца) (1932), The Outskirts (Ускраіна) (1932), Strength (Дужасць) (1934), Ruby (Яхант) (1935), Friendship (Дружба) (1936).

After having been released from ten-year detention, the writer started to work with a greater obsession. From 1946 to 1948 he wrote stories The Ancient (Адвечнае) (the work is incomplete), The Hard Time (Цяжкая гадзіна), The Green Meadow (Зялёны луг), Farewell (Развітанне), The Wind at Daybreak (Вецер на світанні), The Polesie Story (Палеская аповесць), The Life of Vices Shastak (Жыццяпіс Вінцэся Шастака), short stories The Crowned Viper (Гадзюка ў кароне), The Star (Зорка) and other works published in journals and collections of the time. They are on display in the section “The eternally young martyr”.

The exposition also presents books published after the writer’s death: Selected Works (Выбранае) (1959), Stories (Аповесці) (1985). A documentary story A Story for Myself (Аповесць для сябе) (1993) deserves attention. This is a diary of the writer’s memoirs about his close friends, literary and theatrical life of the 1920s – early 1950s, his achievements, dreams and hopes which sadly didn’t come true.

Visitors of the exhibition have an opportunity to get acquainted with translations of Boris Mikulich’s works into Russian, his own translations and works of other authors published in his adaptation.

In 1949, the writer was arrested again and in 1954 he unexpectedly died. Boris Mikulich died in the foreign land, in remote Krasnoyarsk region, not having lived to see neither amnesties nor rehabilitations. The section “The Boris’ Figure” presents a more detailed information on the writer’s life and creative way.

The exhibition is illustrated with photos of the writer.
