On December 18, 2008, at 17.00 in the gallery “Labyrinth” of the National Library of Belarus (the third floor) takes place an opening of a book and documentary exhibition “History of Belarus: the national state system formation” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Belarusian Soviet Socialistic Republic.




January 1, 1919, is a historical date when the Belarusian Soviet Socialistic Republic (the BSSR) was established. National Library of Belarus and National Archive of the Republic of Belarus organized a book and documentary exhibition “History of Belarus: the national state system formation” timed to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the BSSR. The exhibition will be held in the framework of an International scientific and practical conference “Belarus. Stages of national state system formation: to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the BSSR” organized by National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

At National Library of Belarus’ expositionwill be displayed about 300 chronologically arranged publications issued in the 1918th – 30th , -40th , -50th , -60th , -70th , -80th , -90th , and 2000th. In each section are displayed books, encyclopedias, works, scientific papers, collected works and materials, textbooks, monographs, and other materials issued in a given time and revealing the Republic’s life. Displayed materials reveal the BSSR formation, Belarusian National Committee’s activities, events of Belarusian congresses of Soviets, the BSSR government formation, state organization in Belarus in the first years of the Soviet power, formation of the BSSR as an equal member state of the USSR. A considerable part of the exhibition is dedicated to the modern Belarus as the BSSR successor.

National Archive of the Republic of Belarus exhibits 100 original document of 1917-1919 revealing a rapid and contradictory way of self-determination of Belarus. There are documents of Belarusian National Committee, Charters of Belarusian People’s Republic, warrants of delegates of the 6th Northwest conference RKP (b) which took place in Smolensk, journals of the Central Bureau of Communist Party of Bolsheviks of Belarus, and manuscripts and the first official issues of the BSSR establishment Manifesto.

The biggest section of the exhibition reveals the crucial points in the history of the Temporary Workers’ and Peasants’ soviet government and the role of I.V. Stalin in this process. Journals of governmental meetings, materials of People’s commissariats of agriculture, labor, post, telegraph, and public health reveal the first steps of Belarusian state. In a particular section of the exhibition are displayed materials on historiography of Belarusian state system.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
