From 13 March to 30 June, an exhibition "The centenary book. The books of 1913 in the funds of the National Library of Belarus" runs in the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, circular corridor)


The 1913th year is a memorable year marked with several historical events. Among them there are the Second Balkan War, the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, Marcel Proust wrote a novel Swann’s Way (the first work from a multi-volume series In Search of Lost Time), Vladimir Mayakovsky published his first poetry collection I, futurism became prelevant in painting and poetry. While the tango was banned, foxtrot and the term "jazz" appeared. Pierre de Coubertin designed the Olympic flag which was approved by the International Olympic Committee...

The exhibition "The centenary book" represents about 400 editions from the National Library of Belarus which were published in 1913 in different cities of the world. The exposition begins with modern encyclopedias, reference books, chronological collections.

The books which were published in Belarus of that time and dedicated to its economic, social and cultural state are placed in a special section. How many schools were in Vitebsk Region in the early 1913? What social organization helped impoverished women? When and how was the status of the Belarusian Scientific Literature Club for students from St. Petersburg State University published and approved? The editions of the exhibition allow to answer these and many other questions.

In 1913, new books of outstanding Belarusian authors: The Wreath by M. Bogdanovich, The gift of the Neman River, The Thick Log, The Lost Men by Y. Kolas, poetry collection On the Way of Life by Y. Kupala and Abrazkі (The miniatures) Źmitrok Biadula, Apavyadannі (Stories) V. Golubka, Amerykanets (An American) A. Novich, etc. Translations into other languages approved that the revival of the Belarusian language began.

The Second Balkan War caused the worsening of international relations and hastened the beginning of World War II. Thus, in 1913 the state of the country was relatively peaceful and there appeared a lot of literature on relevant topics: Spravochnik sovremennogo ustroystva vooruzhonnykh sil Germanii (Handbook of modern organazation of the German armed forces), Spravochnik sovremennogo ustroystva vooruzhonnykh sil Avstro-Vengrii (Handbook of modern organization of the armed forces of Austria-Hungary), Buduschaya voyna na more i na sushe (The future war at sea and on land), Rosiysky imperatorsky flot. 1913 (The Russian Imperial Navy. 1913), Rusky morskoy i vozdushny flot. Illustrirovanny ocherk deyatelnosti osobogo komiteta po sboru pozhertvovany na voenny flot (The Russian naval and air forces. Illustrated article on the Special Committee work to collect donations for the Navy), etc, – that demonstrate the political foresight and willingness of some countries to military action.

Many books are devoted to children’s reading, education and training, science subjects, agriculture, industrial development, hygiene, health, hobbies and daily life of population.
