A book exhibition "The coryphaeus of Slavonic studies” timed to the 150th birthday of philologist and specialist in the philology of the Slavs Evfimi Karsky runs at reading room 205 from December 27 to January 15.
The name of Evfimi Karsky (1861–1931), the founder of Belarusian scientific linguistics and study of literature, ethnographer, folklorist, paleographer, academician of the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences and a full member of the Institute of Belarusian Culture (Inbelkult) and the Czech Academy of Sciences, associates with an epoch in the history of Belarusian and foreign Slavonic philology and fundamental linguistic studies.
Evfimi Karsky is an exceptionally prolific author of scientific papers on ethnography and study of folklore. The ethnographer studied Belarusian people folk lyrics and life, as well as the history and the development of the Belarusian language, the origins of the Belarusian people and ethnic boundaries of Belarus.
The exhibition comprising more than 140 documents acquaints with the academician’s books which still remain topical.The major scientist’s book is the monograph “The Belarusians” in three volumes to which Evfimi Karsky dedicated 40 years of work and which is worthy of the name “the encyclopedia of Belarusian studies”. Also there are interesting scientific papers such as “The Survey of Sounds and Forms of the Belarusian Language” (1885), “West Belarusian Translations of the Psalter in the ХV–XVII centuries” (1896), “The Belarusian Language” (1918), “The Russian Dialectology” (1924) and others.
A particular section of the exhibition presents books edited or compiled by Evfimi Karsky.
