From 10 April to 31 May, a subject book exhibition “The mysterious and magic world of the past: Belarus in legends” runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205).
During the centuries-old history, each people gathers the best treasures of its original verbal poetry and folklore to enrich the whole world community. These treasures are passed from generation to generation. Just as the wave grinds unyielding stones, the people’s wisdom polishes the legends during centuries.
The exhibition presents more than 300 documents in Russian, Belarusian and Polish. Editions are arranged in four subject sections. The section “The treasury of folklore” includes materials from the collections of eminent gatherers and researchers of Belarusian folklore P. Shpilevsky, P. Sheyn, D. Bokhan, А. Serzhputovsky, М. Fedorovsky and others. The section also includes reference editions and encyclopedias such as the encyclopedias “Belarusian Folklore” in 2 volumes (2005–2006), “The Mythology of the Belarusian People” (2011), “Belarusians: Verbal Poetry”, volume 7 (2004), “Legends” (1983) of series from the series “Belarusian Folklore” and others.
The exposition section “The forefathers’ legacy” acquaints visitors with legends about the origins of towns and villages, and also the eminent historical places. The interesting book of V. Volozhinsky “Minsk in Legends and Mythos” (2012) is also on display.
The section “The silent beholders of nature” presents legends about rivers, lakes, wells, stones and trees.
