From 13 June to 31 July, an exhibition "The whole world of human emotions” dedicated to the 170th anniversary from the date of the birth of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg runs in the Music and Audio Materials Reading Room (room 305).


The name of this composer, pianist and conductor takes a special place in European music. He is the first classic of Norwegian music that put the musical culture of Norway in a row with leading national schools of Europe. His work is closely connected with the life of the Norwegian people, different aspects of their life, images of native wildlife. That is why Grieg’s works are full of features from Norwegian folk music. All the musical and expressive means used by the composer in his works – whether it is harmony, melody, rhythm – have a bright, folk origin that gives unique identity to the composer’s style.

The conducted worked with different genres of music: piano works, including the genres of miniatures (waltzes, small lyrical pieces) and large piano works (sonatas, ballads). Edvard Grieg wrote a lot of songs and romances. An important place in his work belongs to symphonic works. Moreover, the composer turned to genres of vocal-symphonic, choral and theater music as well as he was engaged in journalistic activities.

The exhibition represents books and publications from periodicals that are devoted to the life and work of Edvard Grieg. Among the exhibited documents there is a book Izbrannyye statye i pisma (Selected articles and letters) of the composer that was published in Moscow in 1966.

The main part of the exhibition consists of printed music and audio materials from the collections of the National Library of Belarus. Among them there are music to the drama Peer Gynt of Henrik Ibsen, a concerto for piano and orchestra, Lyric Pieces, a suite From Holberg’s Time, Poetic Tone-Pictures, Norwegian Dances and vocal compositions (romances and songs). Visitors have the opportunity to listen to these and other works performed by Van Cliburn, Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, Victor Merzhanov, Mikhail Pletnev, Boris Gmyrya, Natalia Rozhdestvenskaya, etc.

The exhibition also includes reproductions of portraits of Edvard Grieg (artists A. Gorpenko and E. Verenshell).
