Belarusian Kitabi: a Workshop
Other news

The workshops on kitabi, the unique manuscripts and monuments of Belarusian literacy, were launched on November 27.

The event moderator, Irina Synkova, is a PhD and Associate Professor of the Department of Oriental Languages, the Faculty of International Relations of the Belarusian State University.

Kitabi are the manuscripts created by Belarusian Tatars, who lived in the multi-confessional and multi-ethnic Commonwealth. These manuscripts, written in Arabic script, contain texts in the Arabic, some Turkish, as well as Belarusian and Polish languages. The oldest manuscripts with the Slav texts in Arabic script date back to the 17th century. Religious and didactic works, entertaining stories and descriptions of rituals, divination and astrological texts reveal the spiritual world and culture of Belarusian Tatars.

Kitabi are an object of study for historians, philologists, religion scholars, cultural historians, bibliographers, anthropologists and ethnographers.

The next workshops will be held on December 4 and 8, 2019, at 18.00. Location: educational technology hall (346).

All interested are invited. Free admission.
