The presentation of the three-volume encyclopedia for children Francysk Skaryna took place on November, 29th.
The publication is a joint project of the National Library of Belarus and the publishing house The Belarusian Encyclopedia named after Piatrus Brouka.
The chief editor Larissa Yazykovich told the audience how they accomplished the publication of children’s encyclopedia about Skaryna, which has no analogues yet. She stressed that this three-volume publication was a worthy gift for the readers on the eve of the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing.
Georgy Golenchenko, PhD, Skaryna scholar, presented interesting facts from the life of pioneer printing. The scientist has explored the legacy of Francysk Skaryna for decades.
The event was a form of informative quiz, which captivated not only children but also adults. Each guest of the event had an opportunity to show their knowledge of the life and work of the Belarusian first printer. Most savvy of them received gifts from the publishing house "Belarusian Encyclopedia named after Petrus Brovka".
Alexander Susha, the author of the first children’s encyclopedia about Skaryna, is a cultural historian, bibliologist, chairman of the International Association for Belarusian Studies and deputy director of the National Library of Belarus. He answered all the questions of children, including most unexpected, and intrigued the audience when compared Skaryna with James Bond of the 16th century! Both children and adults listened attentively to the story of how Skaryna kidnapped the doctor and the printer of the King of Prussia. And the author even suggested to make a film, somewhat of Skaryna 008, because there’s something of the famous spy in this legendary person.
The ensemble of ancient and modern music "Brevis" created a special atmosphere, which helped visitors to take journey back to that distant time when the Belarusian printing just started.
At the end of the event children painted the images of Skaryna on easels, and wrote the words of gratitude and sincere wishes for the author.
