From November, 18th, to December, 15th, a thematic book exhibition “Magical polyhedrons” timed to the International Year of Crystallography runs in the National Library of Belarus (3d floor, circular corridor).
The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2014 as the International Year of Crystallography – the science about crystals, their structure, origins and proprieties. The resolution adopted at the 66th session on July, 3rd, 2012, is based on a significant role of studying and application of crystallography in the modern world. By the way, this year is the 100th anniversary from the date of foundation of this science.

The exhibition consists of two blocks. The section “Crystallography: the history and present day” presents books that tell about the development of the science from its origin till today’s time; acquaint with the outstanding scientists who worked in this area; tell about crystals, their form, physical, mechanical, thermal, optical properties, formation and growth, and connections of a chemical compound of a crystal with its physical properties.
The second exposition section “The world of stones” presents books about various minerals including valuable, their structure, qualities, properties, kinds and application. Editions on display are about the world-known gems and treasures. The section includes scientific and popular scientific editions, and also books from which the reader can learn of salutary and mystical properties of minerals and read interesting stories, myths and legends about them.
