From 7 December to 25 January, a book exhibition "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!" works at the National Library of Belarus (2nd floor, circular hall).


Christmas and New Year are our favourite holidays. It is time when we expect miracles and when the world becomes just a little better. Everybody forgets all bad things, and people begin to believe in a magic fairy tale.

A bright book exposition "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!" tells about the history of holidays, traditions of New Year and Christmas, people’s signs and believes.

Christmas, one of the main Christian holidays, appeared in honour of Jesus Christ’s birth. The central place of the exposition belongs to modern editions about celebrating Christmas in Belarus, Russia, France, Germany, Canada and other countries of the world.

New Year is a holiday for everyone. The celebrating of New Year is the most ancient tradition which exists in all nations of the world. For its long history the holiday enriched with set of rules, customs, signs, symbolisms from various cultures. In many European countries some east traditions became usual elements of a kind, fantastic and magic holiday.

Next year in the East calendar is the year of the Dragon. He is a symbol of wealth and nobleness. Many editions are devoted to this mythological character. It is possible to get acquainted at the book exhibition with some of them.

A magic atmosphere of New Year is created by a festive interior, Christmas cheer and entertainments. At the exhibition people can know how decorate an apartment, peculiarly wrap gifts to family and close people, do oneself masks, souvenirs and Christmas-tree decorations. Professional decorators and scriptwriters can give advice which will help to lay the table and organize style unforgettable holiday which will be full of fun, surprises and competitions.

We present the updated virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region": on the 205th anniversary of the composer's birth

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
