From 25 October to 31 December, an exhibition “The bard of the Belarusian soul” devoted to the 130th anniversary from the birth of people’s poet Yanka Kupala runs at the National Library of Belarus (third floor, circular hall).
Yanka Kupala (Ivan Daminikavich Lutsevich) raised poetry to the height which Belarusian literature didn’t know before. He became an outstanding bard of his people, his historic faith. The life of Ivan Daminikavich passed through the most difficult and dramatic periods in the history of Belarus: imperialistic and civil wars, revolutions, the beginning of the Soviet era, the first years of the World War ІІ. His creative activity is a truly encyclopedia of Belarusians’ lives in the 19th – 20th centuries.
Kupala’s poetry collections: the last "The full poetry collection" (1995–2003) and his first poetry collection (1925–1932) are at the beginning of a book-illustrated exhibition "The bard of a Belarusion soul" devoted to the 130th anniversary from the date of the birth of Yanka Kupala, people’s poet of Belarus. Further there are situated chronologically edition which were published during his life. Among them are "Адвечная песня. (The Eternal Song) – St. Petersburg, 1910", "Huslar (Guslar). – St. Petersburg, 1910", "Паўлінка (Paulinka). – St. Petersburg, 1913", "Сон на кургане (The Dream on the Barrow). – St. Petersburg, 1912", "Шляхам жыцьця (The Way of Life). – St. Petersburg, 1913", "Спадчына (Heritage). – Mensk, 1922", "Безназоўнае (Without Title). – Mensk, 1925", as well as the edition "To Byelorussian partisans" (Беларускім партызанам) (1942) which was published after his death and etc.
The facsimile of his first book "Жалейка (The Little Flute). – St. Petersburg, 1908" is presented at the exhibition. Readers of the Library can acquaint with the original edition in the Manuscripts, Rare Books and Old Printed Books Reading Room.
Another part of the exhibition demonstrates works of the bard which were released at the end of the 20th century and contemporary editions of Kupala’s works in various genres. The versatility of Kupala’s talent, which is shown in his poems, narrative poems, dramatic works and articles, is demonstrated in the section "The Master of Belarusian songs".
His works were translated into many languages. Visitors can also see editions in English, Armenian, Ossetian, Bulgarian, Kazakh, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldavian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkmen, Tajik, Uzbek, Ukrainian, French, Chuvash, Estonian.
During all his life Kupala was occupied in translation activity. His translations of such famous writers as A.S. Pushkin, A. Kaltsov, A. Mitskevich, M. Nekrasov, T. Shevchenko and others are well-known, He translated famous epic poem "The Tale of Igor’s Campaign", the common property of ancient Belarusian literature. Some of these translations are shown in the section “Yanka Kupala as a translator” .
Kupala’s works are endless resource of inspiration, artistic perfection which reflects contemporary literary and artistic process. The influence of his heritage on the theatre, fine art and musical culture are presented in the section "Yanka Kupala and art".
The next part of the exposition "Kupala’s world" contains scientific, popular scientific, fiction, educational and encyclopedic editions about his life and works (science about Kupala).
The Belarusian people keep in memory his image of outstanding son of Belarus. Many names of Belarusian streets, squires, institutions of at, education and science contain the name of this great poet. The figure of Yanka Kupala inspired many people for creation of work devoted him. This prose and poetry works, as well as editions about institutions which show our respect and pride in this poet, are hold in the section "The people keep the memory about the poet".
