On December 15th, 2009, in National Library of Belarus took place a seminar-dialogue “Documentary stocks of Belarusian libraries: safekeeping and safety under modern conditions”.


More than 70 specialists from republican, university, regional, city and district libraries and National Library of Belarus participated in the event.

Leading experts of National Library of Belarus (NLB), E.F. Karsky Grodno Regional Scientific Library and Y. Kolas Central Scientific Library of Academy of Sciences of Belarus delivered papers dedicated to the theory and practice of organization, keeping and use of library stocks.

At the seminar the following specialists delivered their papers: T.V. Kuzminich, deputy director of the NLB for information resources; A.V. Predeina, head of the NLB bibliography department; T.A. Kumpel, head of the united stock department of E.F. Karsky Grodno Regional Scientific Library;T.A. Demyanovich, leading librarian of Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts; E.E. Levchenko, head of the NLB book storage department; N.V. Melnikova, leading librarian of the NLB book storage department; O.V. Nyeborskaya, leading librarian of the NLB book storage department; L.I. Samarkina, head of the NLB journals and series storage department; I.M. Toisteva, head of the NLB specialized collection storage department; T.V. Ivashko, head of the NLB specialized collection storage section; A.V. Stefanovich, head of rare books and manuscripts department of Y. Kolas Central Scientific Library of Academy of Sciences of Belarus; Z.S. Kovalenko, head of the NLB restoration and preservation of library stocks.

Participants of the seminar examined conditions of storage of various kinds of documents and the basic methods of safe keeping, restoration, preservation and binding of editions. The following urgent issues were considered:

  • accomplishment of a new edition of the “Instruction on registration and conservation of library stocks in the Republic of Belarus”;
  • development of the National program of safekeeping and development of library stocks in the Republic of Belarus;
  • organization of trainings on restoration and preservation of library stocks;
  • creation of methodological materials on the development and maintenance of library stocks and use of certain kinds of materials.

Within the framework of the seminar-dialogue, participants had an opportunity to visit the NLB’s departments (bibliology department, journals and series storage department, specialized collections storage department and restoration and preservation of library documents department) and to acquaint themselves with conditions and methods of storage of various kinds of editions in the National Library of Belarus.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
