The traditional Rumyantsev Readings, whose co-organizer was the National Library of Belarus, took place at the Russian State Library on April 18–19.
This grandiose event annually gathers specialists from all over Russia and from abroad. The theme of the Rumyantsev Readings in 2017 is the most important event that occurred five centuries ago to change the history of the East Slavonic book-printing – the publication of the first Cyrillic Bible by Francysk Skaryna, a printer from Belarus.
This year’s conference was organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, the Russian State Library, the National Library of Belarus and the Library Assembly of Eurasia.
The objectives of the 2017 Rumyantsev Readings were as follow: to draw attention to the issues of preservation and study of the world cultural heritage and national values, as well as to the problems of libraries functioning at the modern historical stage, to promote the search for innovative development ways, to expand cooperation between cultural, educational, scientific institutions and intercultural interaction.
In 2017, the Rumyantsev Readings gathered over 400 people from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Israel. Experts from libraries of various departmental affiliations and levels (from national to municipal), research institutes and higher and secondary educational institutions, museums, archives, publishing houses, foundations and other institutions and organizations from all parts of Russia came to Moscow.
This year’s topic was: “The 500th anniversary of the first Slavonic Bible of Francysk Skaryna: Formation and development of the book-printing culture”.
The National Library of Belarus was represented by Alexander Susha, the deputy director of the National Library of Belarus and researcher and popularizer of the heritage of Francysk Skaryna.
