On 9 November, the ceremonial donation of the facsimile Book Heritage of Francysk Skaryna to institutions of culture, science and education in Brest Region was held at the M. Gorky Brest Regional Library.
The director of the National Library of Belarus, Roman Motulsky, emphasized that it took about five years to implement the joint project of the National Library of Belarus and the BelVEB Bank, timed to the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book-printing. Thanks to joint efforts of book experts, historians, linguists, literary critics and cultural scientists, all the books of the Belarusian first printer have been recreated in the form of a facsimile.
According to Mr. Motulsky, Skaryna’s translations of the books of Bible was a unique phenomenon in the national and East Slavic cultures. We known more than 300 print copies, kept in the libraries and museums of Belarus, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Russia and Ukraine. The National Library of Belarus keeps 10 books, and this is the only collection of the printing pioneer’s publications.
The facsimile edition of Skaryna’s books is the first opportunity to gather the complete set of his publications, printed in Prague and Vilna.
