The International Congress “500 years of the Belarusian book-printing” has officially opened on 14 September.


The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus with the support of the Central European Initiative (CEI), the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS Member States (MFGS), the Programme Mobility Scheme for Targeted People-to-People-Contacts (MOST).

The official partners of the Congress are the Bank BelVEB, the companies Tregross-Info and Vladimir Grevtsov’s Agency.

The International Congress “500 years of the Belarusian book-printing” is held under the patronage of UNESCO.

Outstanding social and political figures, diplomats, heads and influential specialists of scientific, educational and cultural institutions from all over the world have met today at the Congress in the National Library of Belarus. About 600 delegated from 24 countries will participate in the forum.

Roman Motulsky, the director of the National Library of Belarus, opened the Congress. On behalf of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Maxim Ryzhenkov gave a congratulatory address. Welcoming speeches were made by the Deputy Chair of the Council of Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Marianna Shchetkina, the State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Grigory Rapota, the Minister of Culture of Belarus Boris Svetlov, the Information Minister of Belarus Lilia Ananich, the First Deputy Chair of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences Sergey Chizhik, the Director General of the Library Assembly of Eurasia Galina Raykova, and the Deputy Chair of the Belarusian Library Association Inna Yurik.

Roman Motulsky expressed gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus in the Republic Pavel Latushko. Thanks to their support and efforts the event is held under the patronage of UNESCO.

The UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and the IFLA President Gloria Perez-Salmeron sincerely congratulated the Congress attendees.

The plenary session, which has started after the opening ceremony, is focused on the role of Belarus in the formation and preservation of Europe’s book heritage and the legacy of Francysk Skaryna and his followers.

In the framework of the Congress, there’s the International round table “Documentary heritage in the Central European region: ways of preserving, studying and popularizing”, the 20th General meeting of the non-commercial partnership “Library Assembly of Eurasia” dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the LAE, the 13th International bibliological readings, and also an award ceremony for winners of the 25th National Contest “The library as a centre of national culture”.
