February 12 marks the 70th anniversary of Mr Sergei Chernov, a specialist in the field of information technology, who was at the origins of the informatization of the country's libraries.

Mr Sergei Chernov was born in 1950 in the city of Ulyanovsk, in the family of a military man. He graduated from the Power Engineering Faculty of the Belarusian State Polytechnic Institute (now the Belarusian National Technical University) majoring in power plants and was sent to the Belarusian branch of the G. Krzhizhanovsky Power Engineering Research Institute in 1972.

Mr Chernov has always sought to learn something new and improve his skills. That's why he graduated from the Faculty of Advanced Training for Administrative Officers and Specialists of the Ministry of Instrumentation, Automation and Control Systems of the USSR (USSR Ministry of Instrumentation) majoring in M-6000 Programming at the age of 26. At the age of 33, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Advanced Training of the Ministry of Instrumentation majoring in Real-Time Operating System for SM-3, SM-4 Computer Controlled Information Complexes.

Prior to becoming an employee of the National Library of Belarus, Mr Chernov worked at the Power Engineering Research Institute, as well as at the Central Research and Process Design Institute of Management and Engineering.

The 90s became the time for the introduction of information technologies in the libraries of Belarus. The first computers appeared in the National Library in 1990. Mr Chernov assumed the post of Deputy Director of the National Library for Automation of Library Processes, heading this difficult innovative area, in March 1997. He made a significant contribution to the informatization of the national Library, as well as all libraries of the country.

In the difficult and important period of moving to the new building, Mr Chernov stood at the origins of the development and implementation of IT systems.

He shared his experience on the pages of professional editions, and at various conferences and workshops.

Mr Chernov was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the National Library of Belarus for active participation and great personal contribution to the creation, development, and modernization of the automated National Library system in 2005.

For excellent performance in the development and implementation of state programs and projects in the field of automation of library processes, he was awarded the Badge for Contribution to the Development of the Culture of Belarus of the Ministry of Culture in 2010.

Mr Chernov worked at the Library until 2011. Colleagues warmly recall him as a committed, loyal and understanding leader, a hilarious storyteller, a big traveler and fisherman. To this very day, he is greatly invested in the life of the Library, uniting the stellar automation staff around him.

The staff of the National Library of Belarus congratulates Mr Chernov on his anniversary and sincerely wishes him good health, high spirits and an inexhaustible enthusiasm for years to come!

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
