From November 28, 2007 to December 10, 2007, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (second floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition “For Equal Rights and Opportunities” dedicated to the International Day of Disabled Persons.

The International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1992 (resolution 47/3) and thereafter this Day has being celebrated annually on December 3.

Today there are over 500 million disabled persons in the world (10% of the world population). About two thirds of them live in developing countries. In some countries the number of disabled persons totals about 20% of the whole population. Thus the world community should make efforts to change the attitude towards disabled persons and remove barriers to their socialization and self-actualization.

The task of the International Day of Disabled Persons is to attract attention to the issues of disabled persons, stand for their dignity, and protect heir social, cultural, economic, civic, and political rights.

The exhibition timed to the Day of Disabled Persons acquaints visitors with the urgent issues of social policy and support of disabled persons and their families.

The displayed materials reveal activities of the UN, governmental and non-governmental organizations in the field of the development and implementation of international standards regarding disabled persons and equality of their rights.

The exhibition includes the following sections:
disabled persons and society (general issues);
disabled persons rights;
social protection and education;
disabled children issues;
disabled persons medical and psychological rehabilitation;
disabled persons rights and social protection in the Republic of Belarus.
The exhibition presents over 50 documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, European Union, Council of Europe, and others) in Russian, French, and English languages: books, periodicals, brochures, and the UN mimeographed materials.

We invite to the exhibition social workers, sociologists, disabled persons, students, and professors.
