From December 21st, 2009, to January 8th, 2010, in Belarusian literature reading room is open a book exhibition “The eminent historian, encyclopaedist and publisher” dedicated to the 8oth anniversary of Iosif Khovratovich.


The basic themes of research works of Iosif Khovratovich, the Belarusian historian, honored cultural worker of Belarus (1983), are dedicated to national liberation and revolutionary movement in Western Belarus, the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the history of Soviet-Polish relations, historiography etc.

The section “The understanding and outstanding researcher” of the exhibition reveals Iosif Khovratovich’s research work. There are monographs, essays and articles written buy the author for “Belarusian Soviet Encyclopedia” (1969–1975) in 12 volumes and “Encyclopedia of the History of Belarus” (1993–2003) in 6 volumes.

Iosif Khovratovich is a compiler of “The Illustrated Chronology of the History of Belarus” which was edited both in Belarusian (1995, 1997) and Russian (1998, 2000, 2002) languages. He participated in compiling of fundamental documentary works, wrote forewords and commentaries. The exposition displays as well numerous scientific publications which were edited under his guidance (“The Book of Belarus: a joint catalog (1517–1917)” (1986), “The History of the Communist Party of Belarus” (1968, 1981), “The Chronology of the History of Belarus” (1982, 1989, 1992), “Towns and Villages of Belarus: The Encyclopedia” etc.

Materials displayed in the section “The tireless worker” are dedicated to Iosif Khovratovich’s life and creative activity.

The exhibition presents more than 60 documents.

We present the updated virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region": on the 205th anniversary of the composer's birth

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
