From March 2nd to April 1st, a book exhibition “Wildlife: how to save and preserve it” timed to the World Wildlife Day runs in the Official documents department (room 207).
This Day is one of the “youngest” holidays in the UN calendar. It was proclaimed on December 20th, 2013 at the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (resolution A/RES/68/205) and is observed annually on March 3rd. This date was chosen as on March 3rd, 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna was adopted.
During thousands years peoples and cultures could rely on a rich natural variety of wild plants and animals to get foodstuffs, clothes, medicines and spiritual support. The wildlife remains an integral part of the future of our planet as its practical value is organically combined with ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic aspects of a sustainable development and the well-being of people.
However, despite the indisputable value for mankind, the wildlife is threatened today – some species of plants and animals can simply disappear. One of the main reasons is the habitat loss. In many respects the matter is the vigorous human activity which ruins natural systems and their inhabitants. An excessive use of fresh water, power resources, mass deforestation, modern agriculture and other kinds of human activity destroy the environment leading to the reduction of flora and fauna. Every day about 100 species of living organisms disappear, and more than 7 thousand species of animals and almost 60 thousand species of plants are endangered.
Besides the habitat loss, the wildlife is threatened by illegal trade in species of flora and fauna and poaching.
The World Wildlife Day gives an opportunity to pay attention to the diversity and beauty of wild fauna and flora, and also promotes the knowledge about the advantages of environment protection efforts and reminds of an imperative need to strengthen the wildlife crime control.
The problem of the wildlife preservation takes an important place in the ecological politics of the Republic of Belarus where the following laws have been adopted and taken effect: ”About the environment protection”, ”About flora”, ”About fauna”, other normative legal documents called to provide a legal and economic basis to the preservation and a sustainable use of biological diversity.
More than 100 documents in Russian and English languages are on display: books, brochures, periodicals, booklets.
The exposition includes the subject sections as follow:
- Wild animals, rare and endangered species of animals.
- Wild plants, rare and endangered species of plants.
- Flora and fauna protection.
- International legal documents on the wildlife protection.
- The Red Books.
- Ecological ethics.

The exhibition will be interesting to biologists, zoologists, ecologists, experts in forestry, wildlife management and the environment protection, science officers, students and post-graduates, and also to everyone who is interested in the problem of the preservation of the wildlife and biological diversity.
