Francysk Skaryna (1490–1551), the Belarusian first printed and enlightener is a significant figure on a national scale. His image had become an integral part of the contemporary cultural space of Belarus. Numerous scientific works are dedicated to Francysk Skaryna; a branch of science “the study of Skaryna” exists; the national awards (Skaryna Medal and the Order of Skaryna) are established; educational institutions and streets are named after him; monuments devoted to the first printer have been built.
The offered project presents Francysk Skaryna, the initiator of East Slavic printing and "the hero of the Renaissance", as our contemporary. For the first time, the museum space will be filled not by books. Visitors will have the opportunity to plunge into the modern world of perception of symbols and images of the Belarusian first printer, to find his marks on household items, school accessories, in the student and youth culture in general, among scientists and collectors, corporate attributes, in the artistic embodiment of theater and cinema.
The exposition includes publications from the collections of the National Historical Museum of Belarus (its branches The Museum of the History of Theatrical and Musical Culture and The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema), Polotsk National Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, the Gomel State University named after F. Skaryna, Gymnasium No. 1 named after F. Skaryna in Minsk, Polotsk State Gymnasium named after F. Skaryna, the café U Francyska, and private collectors.
