From 16 December to 6 January, an exhibition "The singer of the people’s life" devoted to the 120th anniversary from the date of the birth of the Belarus composer Y. Tikotsky (1893–1970) runs in the Music and Audio Materials Reading Room (room 305).


Yevgeny Tikotsky, one of the founders of the Belarus music, the national actor of Belarus and the USSR, the winner of the State Award of Belarus (1968), is a striking example of the artist who stands for patriotic principles. Everything that is full with the spirit of nationality, that is poetical to him and that excited his heart found reflection in his works. They became a part of a treasury of musical culture of our people.

Y.Tikotsky used the Belarus folklore in the creation of his music. A good example of which is the opera Mikhas Podgorny (perform. in 1939, 2nd edition 1957) which is devoted to a revolutionary struggle in the Belarusian village. He also composed on a heroic epopee of the Great Patriotic War. The opera Alesya (perform. in 1944; new edition The girl from Polesie, a perform. in 1957; final edition Alesya, perform. in 1967) reflect the times of brave feats of the Belarusian guerrilla, struggle of people for freedom and independence of the Homeland. The composer created other genres. He composed six symphonies, a concert for a piano, a trio for a violin, a violoncello and a piano, a number of vocal products for soloists and chorus, rewrote some tens of the Belarusian national songs, wrote a plenty of music to drama performances.

The main part of the exhibition is musical editions and audio documents from the funds of the National Library of Belarus. Among them there are symphonies 3, 4, 6, a ballad Fairy, a heroic poem The Song about the Petrel, romances, songs and other author’s products. The exposition also contains books and publications from periodicals which are devoted to the life and work of the composer.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
