On 22 March, the National Library of Belarus hosted a round table “Statistical indicators of libraries activity”.
The event was timed to the release of the revised standard of Belarus 7.20-2000 “Library statistics. General provisions”. It will appear in accordance with the State Program “Culture of Belarus” for 2011–2015.
80 delegates participated in the round table. It was representatives of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the National Statistics Committee, the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, the Institute of Culture of Belarus, as well as chiefs and workers from public and specialized libraries.
During the round table the participants examined problems in the national statistics system of libraries activity, reviewed international practice, raised issues on use of qualitative and quantitative indicators in libraries activity, and discussed approaches to optimize forms of statistical accounts. The specialists from different departments shared their experience how to use statistical indicators in the management of their organizations including planning and reporting.
As a result of the event the participants proposed suggestions on development of the system of statistical calculation and criteria in estimation of Belarusian libraries effectiveness.
